Thermohaline mixing in low-mass giants

چکیده

Thermohaline mixing has recently been proposed to occur in low mass red giants, with large consequences for the chemical yields of low mass stars. We investigate the role of thermohaline mixing during the evolution of stars between 1M⊙ and 3M⊙, in comparison to other mixing processes acting in these stars. We confirm that thermohaline mixing has the potential to destroy most of the He which is produced earlier on the main sequence during the red giant stage. In our models we find that this process is working only in stars with initial mass M ∼ < 1.5M⊙. Moreover, we report that thermohaline mixing can be present during core helium burning and beyond in stars which still have a He reservoir. While rotational and magnetic mixing is negligible compared to the thermohaline mixing in the relevant layers, the interaction of thermohaline motions with differential rotation and magnetic fields may be essential to establish the time scale of thermohaline mixing in red giants.

Effects of chemical composition and thermohaline mixing on the accreting components for low–mass close binaries: application to blue stragglers

Blue stragglers (BSs) are important objects in cluster populations because of their peculiar properties. The colours and magnitudes of these objects are critical parameters in population synthesis of the host cluster and may depend remarkably on BSs’ surface composition. Observations show that some BSs are short-orbital-period binaries, which may be accounted for by mass transfer in low-mass bi...

Thermohaline mixing and gravitational settling in carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars

We investigate the formation of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars via the scenario of mass transfer from a carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch primary to a low-mass companion in a binary system. We explore the extent to which material accreted from a companion star mixes with that of the recipient, focusing on the effects of thermohaline mixing and gravitational settling. We have created ...

Compulsory Deep Mixing of He and CNO Isotopes in the Envelopes of low-mass Red Giants

Three-dimensional stellar modeling has enabled us to identify a deep-mixing mechanism that must operate in all low mass giants. This mixing process is not optional, and is driven by a molecular weight inversion created by the He(He,2p)He reaction. In this paper we characterize the behavior of this mixing, and study its impact on the envelope abundances. It not only eliminates the problem of He ...

Lithium production by thermohaline mixing in low-mass, low-metallicity asymptotic giant branch stars

We examine the effects of thermohaline mixing on the composition of the envelopes of low-metallicity asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We have evolved models of 1, 1.5 and 2M and of metallicity Z = 10 −4 from the pre-main sequence to the end of the thermal pulsing asymptotic giant branch with thermohaline mixing applied throughout the simulations. We find that the small amount of He that rem...

A holistic approach to carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars

Context. Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars are known to be the direct witnesses of the nucleosynthesis of the first lowand intermediate-mass stars, because most have been polluted by a now-extinct AGB star. Aims. By considering the various CEMP subclasses separately, we try to derive, from the specific signatures imprinted on the abundances, parameters (such as metallicity, mass, temperat...
